Marriage Bed, Past and
Present
A marriage bed is exactly that, the bed that the wedded couple
shares together on the night of their wedding. For some it is
simply the bed that the couple share that first night, however
it should be the bed the couple share for the rest of their
lives. Of course this means compromise as well, since not
everyone shares the same taste in bedroom décor.
A marriage bed should not be a single or a twin bed, this isn’t
going to fit no more than one on the bed and if it does it
won’t be comfortable. The marriage bed should be roomy and
relaxing figuring that they will spend most of their time
together in it. No one wants to be on a hard, or lumpy surface.
This bed is normally in the center of the room, surrounded by
things the couple loves. A place where they will spend their
sleeping hours as well as their romantic ones together, not to
mention where many discussions will be held and care for
another may end up when one gets sick.
Some believe no one besides the married couple should ever see
what the marriage bed, this includes family coming to visit. It
is disrespectful for a visitor of the opposite sex to be in the
room with the spouse. It is one thing for the happily married
couple to show off their room but never alone.
In history the marriage bed meant the place where the bride
gave her body fully over to her husband, which meant she was a
virgin until marriage. It was highly frowned upon that she ever
spent the night with any man before marriage and, if she did,
there could be trouble. It was harder for a woman to find any
man that would want to share his marriage bed with her if she
was already used.
A marriage bed should be a lot of fun, not only a place of
sleep but also a place to be intimate and to try new things.
The marriage bed should never end up being a place to pile all
the laundry; it should be a place of meeting and enjoyment. If
you are not finding your marriage bed fits this, maybe you
should get a new one. Sometimes buying something new puts a
spark back into things, not to mention it means spending a bit
of time to shop once again. Be careful though, you could end up
making your marriage bed a family bed once your kids are born
if you don’t set limits.
When it comes time to shop for a marriage bed both should like
it. This means that the married couple or soon to be married
couple should go together, which can be a lot of fun. Find out
if you need a firm bed or one with a soft mattress. Long ago a
curtain surrounded a marriage bed so no one could see inside
the sacred place. In a way, the marriage bed became a room of
its own that only the married couple would share, creating life
and lasting memories. No one should ever go to bed angry and
before getting onto the marriage bed they should make up.
The marriage bed was always a place where the couple would come
together at the end of the day. In Medieval times a wife may
not have seen her husband or spoke with him for the entire day,
but this is where she’d get to finally spend some time with him
and talk. Today, lives are still like this, however we can
actually speak with our spouses by phone or computers. But the
marriage bed is still of place that the couple comes together
and it will always be this way.
